Florida AG Request for Drag Show Attendance Records Sparks Backlash

Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier has issued a subpoena to the Kilted Mermaid, demanding records related to a Pride event at the venue. The subpoena, which claims the event featured adult performances in front of children, seeks guest lists, reservation logs, surveillance footage, and performer contracts, with a compliance deadline set for August 8.
The investigation was initiated by a complaint from Jennifer Pippin, a local Moms for Liberty leader, who alleged, without attending, that children were allowed at an adult event. Kilted Mermaid owner Linda Moore refutes these allegations, asserting that the event has been family-friendly for five years. She emphasizes that no nudity or profanity occurs and that parents are informed when adult content begins.
The “Protection of Children Act,” designed to restrict minors’ access to adult performances, has faced legal challenges, resulting in its blockage by federal courts. This has raised concerns over potential chilling effects on LGBTQ+ events and free expression, as the AG’s actions may deter venues from hosting such events.
The issuance of the subpoena has sparked significant backlash from LGBTQ+ advocates and civil liberties groups, who argue that the Attorney General’s actions could lead to broader implications for freedom of expression and the rights of the LGBTQ community in Florida.
They worry that it sets a precedent for increased scrutiny and pressure on venues hosting LGBTQ+ events, potentially stifling cultural and social expression. As the situation unfolds, the outcome of this legal maneuver remains to be seen, with implications that could resonate beyond this single event.
