Trans Women’s Blood Proteins Synchronize With Cis Women’s After Six Months of HRT

As trans women undergo gender-affirming hormone therapy (HRT), significant biochemical changes occur in their blood protein profiles. After six months of HRT, research indicates that 36 out of the top 100 blood proteins in trans women shifted towards patterns typically observed in cisgender women. This represents a substantial change in biochemical markers, aligning their profiles more closely with those of cisgender females.
Notably, seven of the ten key proteins that distinguish male and female physiology were altered during this period. Trans women experienced reductions in proteins associated with male reproductive functions, such as sperm formation proteins, particularly in those treated with cyproterone acetate, which effectively suppresses testosterone levels.
Concurrently, there were increases in proteins linked to body fat and immune response. These changes suggest that HRT not only modifies reproductive markers but also influences metabolic and immune-related functions.
The protein profile changes observed in trans women undergoing HRT showed considerable similarity to those found in cisgender women receiving hormone replacement therapy. This similarity indicates comparable biological responses to hormone therapy, reinforcing the therapeutic efficacy of HRT in achieving desired physiological outcomes.
However, these altered protein levels post-HRT may have implications for health risks. For instance, while trans women might experience an increased susceptibility to autoimmune diseases due to these biochemical changes, they may also encounter a reduced risk for heart disease, a condition more prevalent in males.
