Coward’ Claims and ‘MAGA’ Labels: Sophie Cunningham Ignites Firestorm Over Trans-Athlete Comments

Although Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham’s comments were brief, they ignited a national dispute after she told ESPN that she opposes transgender women competing in female sports and wants to “protect young girls” in locker rooms and competition. The 29-year-old’s remarks quickly expanded beyond basketball, drawing scrutiny over locker room policies and competitive fairness. Supporters framed her position as a defense of women’s sports, while critics argued she targeted transgender athletes and inflamed an already volatile political issue.
The backlash appeared almost immediately. At a Fever road game in Portland, about 50 demonstrators protested outside, and arena reactions in several cities included both boos and cheers when Cunningham appeared. Supportive merchandise thanking her circulated online and in crowds, showing that the controversy mobilized backers as well as opponents. The dispute then followed Indiana from market to market, turning pregame scenes and crowd noise into part of the story.
Commentators and social media critics accused Cunningham of redirecting attention from on-court performance, with some labeling her a “professional victim” or a “MAGA grifter.” At the same time, prominent allies amplified her stance. Vice President JD Vance publicly encouraged her to “keep going,” pushing the issue further into national politics. Team and league figures also responded, including Minnesota Lynx coach Cheryl Reeve, who defended trans inclusion.
The fallout reached organizational levels. A Seattle Storm co-owner was suspended after confronting Cunningham supporters, underscoring how the dispute affected game environments and team operations. Cunningham didn’t retreat. Speaking locally after the ESPN profile, she said, “I said what I said,” and added that she’d submit to sex-verification testing. That response cemented her role as a polarizing figure whose comments kept generating demonstrations, media attention, and sharp partisan reactions well beyond the WNBA court.
