Lawmakers Unite, Urge Speaker Mike Johnson to Abandon Anti-Trans Attacks

As anti-transgender rhetoric escalates within Congress, more than 213 Democrats—including party leaders—have called on Speaker Mike Johnson to address the issue. In a formal letter, lawmakers urged Johnson to enforce congressional decorum and uphold standards of conduct, emphasizing the need to prevent dehumanizing language and slurs against transgender individuals during official proceedings.
This request follows a series of incidents where Republican members repeatedly used slurs and characterized transgender people as “mentally ill,” actions that lawmakers argue directly undermine trans rights and contribute to a hostile environment.
The Democratic caucus frames their appeal as vital not only for the protection of transgender individuals but for the dignity of all marginalized groups represented in Congress. They argue that unchecked rhetoric has real-world consequences, referencing the documented increase in hate-crime incidents based on gender identity. In 2024 alone, 463 such incidents have been reported, underscoring the tangible harm that inflammatory political discourse can produce.
By linking the rise in hate crimes to the tone of congressional debate, lawmakers highlight the responsibility of elected officials to set a standard that discourages prejudice and violence.
Democrats stress that maintaining congressional decorum isn’t a procedural formality but a necessary safeguard for civil rights within the legislative process. They contend that Speaker Johnson’s intervention is critical to restoring a baseline of respect and ensuring that Congress doesn’t legitimize or amplify rhetoric that targets vulnerable communities.
Upholding decorum in Congress is essential to protecting civil rights and preventing rhetoric that targets marginalized communities.
The letter calls for immediate action, warning that failure to address the issue could erode public trust in Congress’s ability to protect fundamental rights and uphold its institutional integrity. As attention to trans rights intensifies, the response from House leadership is set to signal how the institution balances free speech, decorum, and protection for all citizens.
